What's in Your Honda?
Honda supports the NHTSA and federal law enforcement officials in their efforts to inform consumers about the dangers of counterfeit airbags. Only Genuine Honda or Acura Airbags have been designed and manufactured to perform to Honda and Acura specifications.
We empathize with our customers over concerns raised by the NHTSA’s recent announcement about counterfeit replacement airbags. While the NHTSA data indicates that counterfeit airbags affect a very small percentage of vehicles, it is understandable that you want to be certain that your vehicle does not have a counterfeit airbag.
The most important factor is determining if any airbags in your vehicle have ever been replaced. Counterfeit parts could only have been installed when an airbag was replaced, most likely because of a moderate to severe collision.
Airbags installed when the vehicle was originally assembled are not affected.
Information provided by others may have directed you to contact your vehicle manufacturer. Unfortunately, as Honda generally does not know when an airbag is replaced, Honda cannot identify which vehicles have new Honda Genuine replacement airbags and which may have other airbags installed. Because counterfeit airbags may have copied the serial numbers or other identifying information, Honda cannot provide dealers with serial numbers or other information that might determine if a replacement airbag is counterfeit.
There are some steps that you can take to help reduce the uncertainty created by counterfeit airbags. In many cases, these steps should give you a high degree of assurance about the airbags in your vehicle without the cost to disassemble the airbag, which, due to possible false identifying information on the counterfeit airbags, still may not give you conclusive answers.
Again, the most important step is determining if any airbags in your vehicle were replaced. Airbags installed when the vehicle was originally assembled are not affected.
