The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is founded. Funded by the insurance industry and operating as a non-profit organization in Arlington, VA, the IIHS works to reduce the number and severity of motor vehicle crashes. It carries out research and produces ratings for popular vehicles relative to their crash-worthiness.
