Plastic body fillers are introduced; one of the early brand names, is “Bondo.” Prior to this time, lead was required to fill small imperfections in sheet metal. But by about 1955, health and environmental issues raised with the use of lead spelled its demise. Plastic fillers were easier to use, enabling the shop to make a cheap and fast repair. The problem however, was that the plastic fillers sometimes fell off the car, prompting either a re-do of the repair, or a very angry customer – or both. The chemical composition of plastic body fillers has greatly improved since 1955.
