Depending on the source and circumstances, there are several claims to being the very first automobile accident in American history. In one instance, inventor and automotive pioneer, Sylvester Roper of Roxbury, Massachusetts is instantly killed when his steam-powered motorcycle crashes becoming the first motor vehicle fatality. A newspaper account noted that Roper “Died in the Saddle.” It is unknown if he had insurance – or not.
