it’s mechanical and auto body technology and development, the people who drive them, the laws they are subject to, the evolution of the roads they drive on, and almost inevitably, the technology required to recover a collision-damaged vehicle and return it to drivable condition, are all intertwined. The history of the collision repair industry, most specifically, the many companies that support the industry, have a long and interestingly varied past.

The Erie Canal is under construction. One particularly rocky section will require 14 tons of gunpowder, most of it from the DuPont Company, at the time, a major producer of gunpowder in the U.S. It would take almost 100 years, but DuPont would turn from blowing-up rocks, to providing a shiny, durable paint coating for automobiles. In 2013, DuPont spun-off the automotive refinish part of their business which is now known as Axalta Coating Systems, one of the largest auto refinish companies in the world.
