The History of the Automobile in America,

it’s mechanical and auto body technology and development, the people who drive them, the laws they are subject to, the evolution of the roads they drive on, and almost inevitably, the technology required to recover a collision-damaged vehicle and return it to drivable condition, are all intertwined. The history of the collision repair industry, most specifically, the many companies that support the industry, have a long and interestingly varied past.

February 14, 1804

As early as the Revolutionary War period, men had dreamed of vehicles that would traverse the land between settlements in self-powered vehicles that would run on common roads.  On this date Oliver Evans of Philadelphia received a patent for a high-pressure steam engine designed “to propel boats and land carriages.”  It’s unknown if any thought was given to how to repair “land carriages” that became collision damaged.
